Howard Bell wins international award for Minnesota Medicine article
MINNEAPOLIS, July 2, 2008—Howard Bell, a frequent contributor to Minnesota Medicine, has been named one of the recipients of the 7th Annual Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards.
Bell, who lives in Onalaska, WI, won the award for his cover article "Of Mice and Medicine," on the topic of animal research, which appeared in the April 2007 issue of Minnesota Medicine. The award for the Internet version of the article.
He took part in a ceremony June 23 to honor the winners.
The awards, named in honor of noted heart surgeon Michael DeBakey, M.D., recognize outstanding journalism "that discusses the essential role of humane animal research in medical discoveries and scientific breakthroughs," according to a news release.
Minnesota Medicine is in good company. Other awards went to articles int e Wall Street Journal, Philadelphia Inquirer, Agence France-Presse, Science & Technology Magazine, and to two Oscar-nominated film directors.
The DeBakey Awards are sponsored by the Foundation for Biomedical Research, which is dedicated to improving human and animal health by supporting for the humane and responsible use of animals in medical and scientific research.
