About the MMA

Following a comprehensive assessment of the MMA committee structure in 2010, the MMA Board of Trustees decided to sunset its Committee on Legislation effective January 1, 2011.

The MMA’s strong commitment to legislative advocacy remains intact; committee work in this area has actually been expanded and enhanced by embedding responsibility for legislative topics within each of the MMA policy committees.

Over the past several years, the Committee on Legislation has played an increasingly limited role in shaping MMA’s legislative efforts. For example, most legislative advocacy is based on already established MMA policy or is developed by committees with more focused subject matter expertise (e.g., MMA Public Health Committee or MMA Quality Committee). Similarly, decisions as to overall MMA priorities and resource allocation rest with MMA leadership – the Board of Trustees. As a result, the Committee on Legislation has been used primarily for updates and discussion, and attendance has suffered.

The decision to sunset the Committee on Legislation was made following both a thorough review and significant debate. The MMA’s committees exist to help the MMA fulfill its vision, mission, and strategic plan. The MMA Board of Trustees is confident the recent committee changes will continue to advance MMA’s policy and advocacy priorities.
